How it works. Walking costs roughly 0.0004 kcal per step per kilogram of body weight over resting, which lines up with walking at a normal pace (about 2.3 METs net) and a typical stride. Heavier bodies burn more per step; that is why the converter asks your weight instead of pretending one number fits everyone. A kilogram of body fat is roughly 7,700 kcal.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?
Net of what you would burn resting anyway, about 0.0004 kcal per step per kilogram of body weight. At 60 kg that is roughly 240 kcal, at 70 kg about 280, at 80 kg about 320, at 90 kg about 360, and at 100 kg about 400.
Why is this number smaller than my fitness tracker shows?
Many trackers report gross burn: walking calories plus the calories you would have burned sitting still for that time. This converter reports net burn, the extra cost of the walking itself, because that is the number that actually changes your daily balance.
How many steps does it take to burn 1 kg of body fat?
A kilogram of body fat stores about 7,700 kcal. At 70 kg of body weight, that is roughly 275,000 steps; at 90 kg, about 214,000. Spread over a month, an extra 7,000 to 9,000 daily steps works out to roughly a kilogram.
Does walking speed matter?
Less than people expect. Per kilometre, brisk and relaxed walking cost similar energy; walking faster mostly burns the same calories in less time. Step count times body weight stays a good estimate at everyday paces.
